There is an exuberance to Tom Scott (Sept. 12, 327 West 13th Street) and his capacious ponchos, swingy calf-length skirts and draping harem pants. Mr. Scott, a knitwear specialist, introduced his accessories line in 2001 and added clothing two years later. The collection, built initially on chunky scarves and buttery jersey wraps that could easily double as ready-to-wear, is sold at vanguard outposts like Barneys New York and Ikram in Chicago. In recent months Mr. Scott expanded his repertory to encompass latticework dresses, popcorn-stitched sweaters and fisherman cables turned upside down. Twisted? A little. But impressive.

THE fashion calendar is glutted with scores of young hopefuls jostling to make their mark during New York Fashion Week. Some will attain the brief but glorious life span of a butterfly, spreading their wings for a season or two, while others will demonstrate formidable staying power. Among the more than 100 designers showing their spring-summer 2011 collections at Lincoln Center and elsewhere around town are a handful of strikingly inventive talents who have caught the eye of influential insiders.
