On February 7, 2017, our friends at Sunbury Textile Mills, Mark Grigalunas, Senior Vice President, and Kathleen Remsa, Senior Designer, joined Marcia Weiss, Associate Professor of Textile Design at Philadelphia University, in preparing PhilaU's Textile Design students for career interviews.

Mock interviews were held, which covered general and critical questions faced when going in for an interview, as well as the impact of an interviewee’s answer and actions in getting a job. During the seminar the students also had the opportunity to ask specific questions regarding their personal concerns of interviews.

Textile Printing Seminar

As a follow-up of the collaboration of the Textile Design and Fashion Design students, faculty member Wendy Anderson, Technical Associate in Digital Textile Printing, gave a seminar on the process and preparation needed for textile printing. During the seminar she provided detailed information on textile printing along with physical samples of the process.  PhilaU Textile Design students have great access to a full range of printing capabilities, from hand screen printing to state of the art in digital technology.

Liora Manne visited Textile Design program at PhilaU

On Monday, January 30, 2017, Liora Manne visited our students at the Textile Design Department at Philadelphia University.

Manne is the founder of The Liora Manne company. She started her company in 1990 with the idea to create material for a variety of end uses. This concept led her to focus more on home fashion textiles. Since then, they have produced many bold, contemporary colored, custom rugs, cushions, wall coverings, and furniture textiles by using fiber and needle punch technology called the Lamontage process.

Our students will have opportunity to design and create new products using the Lamontage process. In May 2017, student work will be exhibited at Liora’s showroom in New York City. During the exhibition the top three projects will be awarded prizes, along with the possibility of an internship for those students.

As Marcia Weiss stated during the meeting “We know that you, our students, are incredibly talented, it is time the world knows it too.”

PhilaU Textile Faculty participates in George Washington's Revolutionary War tent restoration.

Philadelphia University's Faculty participated in the restoration of the original oval linen tent used by George Washington as his office and living quarters during the Revolutionary War. The 10 ft tall masterpiece will be placed as a permanent installation on April, 2017 at the Museum of American Revolution in Philadelphia.

Wendelyn Anderson, technical associate for PhilaU’s Center for Excellence in Surface Imaging, assisted Virginia Whelan, a textile conservator specialist, in making high-resolution images of fabric, which resembled the original linen canvas fabric of the oval tent. The fabric was printed on polyester with a digital inkjet printer and it was used to replace large tears, holes, and missing pieces in the tent. The procedure went through various trails consisting of two main stages, first to match the color then the scale of the fabric.

Another faculty member, E.J. Herczyk, associate professor and drawing coordinator in PhilaU’s Textile Design program, served as an adviser on the project.

International Textile Alliance Educational Gala

Marcia Weiss presented the Fashion & Textiles Futures Center at the International Textile Alliance Educational Gala on December 5th in Highpoint NC.  As a result of the strong efforts by Textile Design Advisory Board member Wesley Mancini, the International Textile Alliance sponsored the renovations to the Textile Design studio. The studio will be named the International Textile Alliance Textile Design Collaborative Studio. Great thanks to Wesley for the ongoing support!
