Sunbrella--The Next 20 Years

PhilaU students in Textile Design, Textile Engineering and Industrial Design participated in a semester-long design project sponsored by Glen Raven, Inc. and Sunbury Textile Mills. The students were challenged to envision the next 20 years of the Sunbrella brand. Students created textiles for a wide-range of end uses for this brand, the leader in outdoor furnishings. Top prizes went to: Kailey Smith, first place; Emily Weiss, second place; Xue "Susan" Sun, third place; and Mary Armacost, first honorable mention. In addition to cash prizes, all four students will tour the Sunbury Textile Mill, in Sunbury, PA. Kailey also has been invited to Highpoint, NC for the Showtime Market.

The Bachelors of Science in Textile Design and Masters of Science in Textile Design programs provide integration and balance between creative design and technology. In the undergraduate program, students explore weaving, knitting and printing, with the opportunity for advanced course work in the areas of their choice. Students in the graduate program are required to specialize in one area (knit, weave or print), but are encouraged to incorporate the other areas of textile design through their foundation courses, elective or design studio work.

Design research is stressed from the beginning of the programs. Being in the a major city is a great resource as is The Design Center at Jefferson with its textile collection from around the world.
